The right skirting boards for the flooring

The baseboards are the finishing of the floor on the sides and transitions. In addition to the practical aspects, they also have a visual impact on the overall appearance. Therefore, it is all the more important to find the right skirting boards for the particular floor covering.

Overview of the individual variants of skirting boards

When selecting skirting boards for the floor covering, an overview of the variants offered is helpful. You can choose from the following options:

  • Foiled skirting
Foiled models have MDF in the interior and are provided with a strong foil. The foiling can be in different decors. Easy cleaning and high durability speak in favor of foiled moldings.

  • Skirting boards made ofsolid wood
Skirting boards made of solid wood are natural and high quality and bring a long life. Each performance is unique, this is ensured by the grains on the wood. What is important is the correct fastening of the moldings. Since solid wood is still working, it should not be glued, but better nailed or screwed.

  • Skirtingboards made of plastic
Inexpensive and at the same time resistant to moisture are skirting boards, which are made of plastic. A big advantage is that skirting boards made of plastic are thin and therefore flexible. This makes them suitable for skirting areas that are not completely flat.

  • Veneered moldings
Veneered moldings are a combination of real wood and foiling. The carrier here is not MDF, but wood. It is covered with real wood veneer. This allows users to benefit from an attractive appearance, while at the same time the veneer ensures that the moldings are very stable.

Parquet or plank flooring - these skirting boards fit the bill

Floors made of parquet or also planks bring a special elegance with them. Finding the right skirting boards here is a challenge. Since both variants are real wood, the skirting boards should be made of solid wood if possible. Depending on personal taste, it is possible to see whether the skirting boards are finished with varnish, wax or oil.

If you do not want to use skirting boards in wood color, you can also opt for a slight contrast. White skirting boards offer a beautiful eye-catcher. Solid wood skirting boards can be finished with a white varnish. This visually changes the whole picture.

Laminate - foiled skirting boards as the first choice

When it comes to laminate, it's mainly a matter of finding skirting boards in the right color. Laminate is one of the most popular floor coverings and is now available in numerous different colors and designs. Finding the right skirting boards here can take time.

Foiling ensures that there are different skirting boards that match the color of the laminate. Just as with plank flooring or parquet, white moldings are a very classic choice.

TIPS:
Affordable are moldings that are made on a base of MDF.

Cork flooring - working with colors

When it comes to cork flooring, there are several options. Many users like the moldings to blend visually with the cork floor and thus not stand out. Therefore, there is an option to make both the floor and the skirting boards in one go and make both from cork.

As an alternative, the skirting boards for cork flooring can be worked with colors. A particularly elegant combination are skirting boards in white, cream or beige . With the material it is necessary to consider where the floor and skirting boards are laid.

More and more often cork flooring is laid in damp rooms. The floor is robust and is sealed. However, with the skirting boards, it is important to make sure that they are moisture resistant. This is guaranteed, for example, MDF baseboards.

Tiles - skirting boards made of MDF as a favorable option

Tiles have a long tradition as a floor covering. They are robust, easy to clean and come in a variety of designs and materials. But even here it is necessary to work with skirting boards to get a nice finish.

For an attractive look, it is recommended to rely on skirting boards made of the same material as the tiles. To what extent this can be implemented is a question of budget. Cutting to the appropriate widths and lengths should be done professionally.

Another option is to opt for skirting boards made of MDF. They are inexpensive and can be processed even in rooms where there is high humidity.

Carpeting - plastic can be processed with glue

Carpet as a floor covering provides warm feet and a pleasant atmosphere. Increasingly, therefore, it is experiencing a revival and is laid out in entire rooms. Skirting boards are ideal for finishing off the sides and for transitions.

For a suitable appearance, plastic moldings can be used. These are available with a smooth surface and can therefore be glued with cuttings of the selected carpet . In this way, they fit exactly to the carpet and a harmonious picture is created.

If you do not want to use glued skirting boards, you can choose versions made of plastic in a matching color.
