Baseboards - decorative interface between wall & floor

Baseboards serve as a decorative finish to a floor covering and create a stylish connection to the wall. They cleverly hide the corner joints between the wall and the floor. If you choose the type "skirting board cable channel", you can even make electrical cables disappear behind it. All this discreetly yet effectively enhances the interior.

However, in addition to the visual task, skirting boards serve primarily as protection against damage and dirt. It is easy to hit the wall when rolling back the desk chair or to touch the wall of the room with a wet mop while cleaning. Robust baseboards protect against all these everyday mishaps. So it's clear: baseboards and skirting boards are functional and decorative must-haves. But which are the right ones?

Difference skirting board - baseboard: Is there one?

The difference between skirting and baseboard lies in the area of application. Skirting boards are attached to the wall or board, creating a transition from the wall to the floor. Skirting boards form the finish under an object such as a dishwasher. In common parlance, however, the distinction between skirting and baseboard is omitted - and for good reasons. Both moldings are the same in terms of their construction. Thus, depending on the model, wood, plastic and the like are used for skirting boards just as they are for baseboards.

Material for skirting and baseboard: What is there?

The material from which skirting boards are made depends entirely on the product. For example, manufacturers use wood and MDF as well as metal for skirting boards. PVC baseboards are also available. No matter what material skirting boards are ultimately made of, they come in different cover widths, heights and profiles. Variants of the type "skirting cable channel" have a cavity inside.

Skirting laminate and other substrates: What material is ideal for skirting boards?

It is ideal when the baseboards harmonize with the flooring. The decisive factor here is the width of the expansion joint. It should be completely covered by the skirting board. Once the required width has been clarified, the design question arises. Here are a few tips for a coherent overall appearance of the interior design depending on the floor covering:

  • Baseboards wooden floors and parquet: such a noble floor deserves a high-quality skirting made of natural or solid wood. As for the color, the skirting board should harmonize with the floor. This is especially important for brown tones, which can differ in nuances. A special varnish optimizes the durability of the skirting.
  • Skirting laminate and PVC skirting: These floor coverings already have a delicate sheen, which is why the skirting boards should also have this visual effect. One option is to choose laminate as the manufacturing material for the baseboard. Another option is baseboards made of MDF. The finely grained wood is pressed into moldings and then sealed with a film. Similarly inexpensive are models of the type skirting plastic.
  • Skirting carpet: Carpeting often uses the same material as a baseboard. From an aesthetic point of view, this may be appealing. However, this solution is not durable, because quickly creates an untidy picture. What to do? Similar to the skirting laminate and PVC skirting, a skirting plastic can do a good job. It is available in numerous colors, which is why it can be perfectly matched to the wall color. From skirting white to stone gray and slate, numerous shades are available.

Plastic skirting boards and more: choose smart for a functional room decoration

No matter whether wood, plastic or another material is used for the baseboards, they always optimize the interior design. If you choose them smartly and with the flooring in mind, you will enjoy them for many years. Another advantage is the ease of installation of the moldings.
